FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: West Coast Reduction Wins B.C. Sustainability Award Vancouver, B.C. – May 20, 2016 – West Coast Reduction has won the BC Food Processors Association’s annual Sustainability Award for its leadership role in Western Canada’s agri-food supply chain. The honour was presented at the BCFPA FoodProWest Awards Gala dinner on May 19 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver. The awards celebrate the accomplishments of companies that make the most significant impact in the food industry. As the largest independent animal by-products renderer in Western Canada, the family-owned company operates an integrated rendering, processing and shipping plant at its long-time Port of Vancouver flagship location, and serves 11,000 suppliers through a network of facilities in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Every year, West Coast Reduction recycles 1 billion pounds of inedible meat, poultry and fish by-products, and exports more than 1.5 billion pounds of canola oil. “This award recognizes our company’s long-time role in supporting B.C.’s circular economy,” said Barry Glotman, CEO of West Coast Reduction. “As the original recycler, we keep animal by-products out of landfills, and create products like protein meals and fats, which are then sold to customers worldwide. This process puts money back in the pockets of our local restaurant and agri-food businesses.” West Coast Reduction met the following criteria to beat out the competition: • Leader in sustainability processes and practices • Positive contribution to the environment • Inspirational • Role model “West Coast Reduction plays an integral role in our province’s food industry,” said James Donaldson, CEO of the BCFPA. “Through critical services such as rendering and used cooking oil recycling, plus the production of ingredients for animal feed and fertilizers, this integrated company helps make our livestock, butcher shop and restaurant sectors both sustainable and economically competitive.” Without West Coast Reduction, farmers across Western Canada would not have access to international markets, and meat by-products from the restaurant and agri-food sectors would clog our landfills – creating enough unsanitary organic waste to fill 1,000 B.C. Place Stadiums every year. About West Coast Reduction As Western Canada’s largest independent rendering company, West Coast Reduction Ltd. is a Vancouver-based, family owned and operated company that started over 50 years ago as a single butcher shop. The company has operations in Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, Vancouver and Nanaimo, providing a necessary service to farms, feedlots, restaurants, supermarkets and processors of beef, pork, poultry, and fish. The company also provides financial support to a wide range of community groups that range from health care centres and academic institutions to social services and arts organizations. http://www.wcrl.com/
